About the Music
So this music is free?
That's right! Completely free of cost. Depending on the license, many of these songs are also free in the sense that you can make derivative works of them without paying royalties.
Can I share this music with a friend?
Absolutely, that's the point! As long as you pass on the artist and license information, you can distribute this music as much as you like.
I don't like any of this music.
Though he tried to have variety, the guy who put together these tracks has specific taste. You would not believe the stuff that got left out to fit everything on one CD. There is probably free music you would like too.
Where do I get more free music?
There are many places. All these tracks come from http://jamendo.com.
Why would an artist give away their music for free?
Good question. In a world where technology has made the supply of music practically infinite, perhaps a supply and demand business model is not optimal. By freely licensing their music, artists can spread their music faster and benefit financially from increased sales of concert tickets, fan gear, and physical CDs. This eliminates the necessity of a record label, and levels the playing field for artists, relying on their own talent rather than getting lucky enough to be discovered by a major label.
About Free Culture
Free Culture encompasses open source software, freely licensed media, and intellectual property law reform. The word "free" refers to freedom, rather than free of cost. However, information being free of cost is part of that freedom. You can find out more about Free Culture at Virginia Tech at http://vt.freeculture.org, or more about Free Culture in general at http://freeculture.org.
