Rock-paper-scissors tournament with valuable prizes? ~ ANTHONYANTHONYANTHONY 09:55, 21 September 2007 (JST)
I volunteer Anthony to bring prizes. ~ Conley 10:36, 26 September 2007 (JST)
News
First ever lawsuit over GPL violation
Andersen v. Moonson Multimedia
It's the first US copyright infringement lawsuit based on a violation of the GPL.
- Check it out on Groklaw
- It looks like it is going to be a quick, out of court settlement. See here.
- Guess again.
NBC soon to give (DRMd) copies of their shows up for download
7 day limit, "unskippable" commercials. Defective by design.
Should this be considered progress? What is your take?
Won't work. Will be as effective as Vongo. Matt 08:32, 22 September 2007 (JST)
I don't think we can compare this to Vongo. Vongo cost money and people were already going online all the time to watch Heroes. I hope people get annoyed enough at the DRM that it creates more anti-drm sentiment Conley 07:40, 23 September 2007 (JST)
The Netherlands is the first country to be fully on OSM
Amsterdam hit OpenStreetMap
You can read about it on OpenGeoData
Does anyone want to do a mapping party? ~ Conley 04:13, 26 September 2007 (JST)
People who have GPS devices:
People who are interested in doing a mapping party:
Intel starts linux power saving project
Check out Less Watts
Texas family is suing Creative Commons
Virgin used a Flickr image with a CC-BY license on a billboard, they get sued along with CC.
It's so weird that they are suing CC. It would make more sense to sue Flickr. ~ Conley 11:16, 26 September 2007 (JST)
Amazon starts DRM free music store
Check it out here.
Death to DRM! ~ Conley 11:05, 26 September 2007 (JST)
Cory Doctorow writes about the day Google became evil
Get it here.
I wish the story weren't so exagerated. You don't have to stray far from the truth to realize Google is getting to big for its britches. ~ Conley 06:55, 27 September 2007 (JST)
SGA stuff
Let's see if Sarah has anything to tell us
VTLUUG Crash Course
Monday and Tuesday, from 7:30 PM till 9 PM in Colonial Squires
People who plan on attending:
- Conley
- Sarah
- Matt
How did it go?
We got write permission to an NTFS partition on Sarah's machine. Yay. We didn't get much advertising in though :(. ~ Conley 11:11, 26 September 2007 (JST)
I told you it would work. But seriously the crash course is way too technical. This isn't 5 years ago. You don't need to depend on the command line as much as you used to, and advocating it this early will scare some away. Matt 15:58, 27 September 2007 (JST)
Amping the advertising
Check out all potential advertising
Press release
Let's see what Bethany has.
Flyers and cards
Let's see what Ashton has.
Public service announcements on WUVT/VTTV
Let's see if Ashton has any more info.
A-frame
Let's see what Matt has.
I think that there was a misunderstanding when I told you about the frame. I probably said "a" twice by accident that day. Matt 15:53, 27 September 2007 (JST)
Halloween public domain movie night
Halloween public domain movie night
We need to pick a movie.
Free the Collegiate Times
What's the status?
JCOTS Meeting
It's worth a mention again.
JCOTS Open Education Resources Advisory Committee is at 2:00 pm on Monday October 1st. The meeting will take place at Northrop Grumman's new data center in Chesterfield county.
If none of us go, (I don't think any of us will), I will read up on the meeting summary, perhaps contact Dr. Moore about how it went, and report at the following FC meeting. ~ Conley 02:55, 22 September 2007 (JST)

FC bylaws
FC.o is undergoing some reorganization, and we need to vote yes or no on the current bylaws.
You can see them here.
I'll bring a copy in case someone wants a look-see. ~ Conley 01:40, 26 September 2007 (JST)
VT chapter votes
- Conley YES (I don't see a problem with them)
Net neutrality
The free culture response is to vehemently oppose any ISP without a neutral net. Probably all of us who know about the issue feel that way, but how do you feel about the legislation?
- Conley Unsure at the moment...please sway me!
This got way too technical. No one could even agree on what to argue about. Needs more background information next time. (There will not be a next time)
Show and tell
Open floor
suggest a circulation of minutes/attendees/actions so that we virtual types can get a feel for the what/who/why of meetings.
Ron
Don't worry Ron. Starting next week Anthony will take minutes. ~ Conley 11:41, 27 September 2007 (JST)
