Amazon is watermarking their mp3s
Apparently it just shows where the mp3 was purchased. I don't get it. What's the point? ~ Conley 01:52, 28 September 2007 (JST)
Maybe to track it on P2P networks? ANTHONYANTHONYANTHONY 04:41, 28 September 2007 (JST)
Pretty much. Also kind of relates to what I found here a while ago. Matt 12:21, 1 October 2007 (JST)

OLPC announces a give one get one sale
It is supposed to happen on November 12th.
Shoot, I need $399. I so want to buy one of these. --Yashton 15:19, 2 October 2007 (JST)
I'm waiting until it actually is a $100 laptop --Conley 17:27, 2 October 2007 (JST)
The idea is nice, but frankly I think that there are more important things to give to third world countries right now than the Internet, like food and medicine. In my experience, the Internet is mostly just the world's biggest time waster. Matt 05:50, 3 October 2007 (JST)
Agreed, but if you give people technical training, they can get better jobs and improve living conditions in their country. I don't think though, that laptops will solve all problems. Aid in other areas like food and water is still going as well. Everything helps in some way. The computers are designed to do ad-hoc/mesh networking, so in principle they could get internet access, but it's mostly for cooperative learning. Computers may be a big time waster, but they are a very powerful tool. And for it being $100, "Pricing is currently set to start at US$188 and the goal is to reach the US$100 mark in 2008" (Wikipedia) Moore's law rules. I'd buy one mostly because you are helping a kid to have one. I can't imagine not having a computer to hack on.
First RIAA jury trial
Check it out on Groklaw.
It is supposed to start Tuesday.
FINALLY! Matt 12:06, 1 October 2007 (JST)
WIPO creates a copyright law workbook for children
Here.
While it's nice to see that there is at least some coverage of the PD and fair use, I still would perceive it as a biased document. It doesn't teach the children to question the present. If no one questions the present, there can be no change for the future, which is ultimately what organizations like WIPO want: to keep the status quo. Matt 12:15, 1 October 2007 (JST)
There's also this critique of the workbook, but beware. It too is heavily biased (albeit in the opposite direction). Matt 12:29, 1 October 2007 (JST)
Does anyone else have strong feelings about WIPO? I've always seen them as a fairly neutral organization (if neutral is good). -Conley 13:26, 1 October 2007 (JST)
Captain Copyright Not the first time somebody has tried to brainwash children... --Yashton 08:57, 2 October 2007 (JST)
Anthony showed that to me. Fun stuff. --Conley 09:15, 2 October 2007 (JST)
Blender's Peach project begins

JCOTS Meeting
Conley is going to give a summary of the meeting.
4 minute film competition
Duff and Conley got 4th place. From the website:
The top four teams will present their videos Thursday, October 4th at 4:00pm at the Armory building on the Virginia Tech campus.
We invite the winning teams to tell us a little about their film-making experiences. So mark your calendars one more time as we conclude the first annual Four-Minute Film Festival.
This will be a good chance to throw out a plug for the club. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should say? -Conley 03:34, 1 October 2007 (JST)
Show and tell
Will Ashton bring some of his knitting?
Anthony should sign his comments -Conley 03:35, 1 October 2007 (JST)
Open floor
Anyone know how to get the comments in dotted boxes to wrap around the frame? On Firefox it looks like they are running off of the page. Matt 12:16, 1 October 2007 (JST)
Yea, I have that problem too. I just make new lines manually so it doesn't happen on my monitor. -Conley 13:26, 1 October 2007 (JST)
We need to try and make sure a the meeting that everyone knows about the wiki, and knows how to make a user, since i see only a few of us making edits. --Yashton 15:15, 2 October 2007 (JST)
I think a lot of people know how, but are too lazy too (or just have better things to do) --Conley 17:27, 2 October 2007 (JST)
There should probably be a page on how to edit wikis too. If possible, it might be a good idea to skin MediaWiki so that it looks like the main site, or at least put an image in the upper left corner. Matt 05:53, 3 October 2007 (JST)
I have shell access to the fc.o server so someone make me an image and I'll do it. Also, feel free to start a wiki editing page and a sandbox. --Conley 06:01, 3 October 2007 (JST)
