News

DJ Spooky contributes to OLPC

Wired article.

Jamendo page.

This is news from last week, but I had forgotten to add it. This short (an honestly not that good) album has sky-rocketed to first place on the Jamendo rankings. This is big air time for Jamendo, and for Free Culture. Also, yes Duff, it is by-sa. --Conley 00:10, 22 October 2007 (JST)

Ubuntu Gusty Gibbon released

Ubuntu home page

Could someone burn a disc to share it for those who use Ubuntu and may want to upgrade? I will probably later, but put your name down here if you want to commit to it.

The servers are probably still getting hammered, so I would reccomend that those who can't wait should download the alternate ISO with BitTorrent or from the VT mirror if your ISP is draconian. Loopmount it with this
sudo mount -t iso9660 ubuntu-7.10-alternate-i386.iso /cdrom -o loop
and then follow the instructions on Ubuntu's upgrade page. I'd also recommend installing partimage and imaging your partition as a backup in case Gutsy makes things worse, since you can't downgrade. Matt 03:05, 20 October 2007 (JST)
It appears that the VT mirror no longer offers Ubuntu ISOs. Instead they have set up a mirror for updates. It's not in the list of official update servers so you'll need to edit /etc/apt/sources.list manually so that it points to http://mirror.cc.vt.edu/pub/projects/ubuntu. That should shave off a few seconds of update time while on campus, although I do wish that they didn't have to get rid of the ISOs as well.
All you non-n00bs can of course ignore these two comments. Matt 06:33, 25 October 2007 (JST)

People bringing in Gusty CDs:

  • Ashton (I will bring a couple copies for anyone who wants one.)
  • Matt (I'll bring the alternate CD, since that's what's needed for upgrades. I'll also bring the Kubuntu LiveCD so people can see if they like KDE better and a LiveCD with partimage so that people can backup their partitions.)

International Music Score Library Receives Cease-and-Desist

The International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP), who has provided public domain sheet music for quite some time, has been forced to shut down. Universal Edition, a music publisher from the European Union, sent them a cease-and-desist letter last Saturday October 13, 2007.

The works hosted on IMSLP have moved into the public domain in Canada, where IMSLP's servers are located. However, the copyrights of some of those works still haven't expired in the US and the EU, hence the cease-and-desist. This brings up some interesting questions about the applicability of intellectual property law over the internet, and across national borders.

It's made with Neverwinter Nights.

Turbolinux signs MS pact

Slashdot article.

Comcast is jamming Gnutella and even Lotus Notes

Article on EFF.

I hear we might even see class-actions over this (Slashdot for lack of a better source/laziness). Here's hoping. Matt 06:47, 25 October 2007 (JST)

Halloween public domain movie night

Halloween public domain movie night

Poster stuff

Posters and a Flyer are at [Ashton's here]

Flyer stuff

the VTU printed out flyers for us. We will decide what to do with them.

Handouts

Getting the DVDs

Night of the Living Dead is burned. I'll see if I can get The Brain that Wouldn't Die done soon. I'm using DVD-Rs so if Duff could use DVD+Rs in case the player is picky about one format over the other (I have had this happen to me a few times) that would be great, but if not that's fine too. Power of 16

This is probably jumping the gun a bit, but i found the Power of 16 website. Figured this would be the best place to put the link. Power of 16 website. Sounds like some cheesy meet and great student organizations thing. Could be a great place for some plugs *grins*.--Trebor 01:11, 19 October 2007 (JST)

People who went:

It was pretty lame except that I won ~$20 of free stuff. --Conley 08:49, 24 October 2007 (JST)

Show and tell

Conley: finished reading Accelerando

Conley: finished reading Beasts of New York

Conley: Jon Evans, author of Beasts of New York, picked up my review

Evans' livejournal.

Conley: spoke with Chris Rice about old superman cartoons being in the public domain

Several people: Free film from last week

We watched The Last Man on Earth. What did those who watched think?

Utterly laughable. Matt 06:01, 25 October 2007 (JST)
I didn't like how the vampires were more like Zombies. I liked the plot twists, although the very end was insulting to the rest of the movie. --Conley 06:32, 25 October 2007 (JST)

Open floor

Verizon to offer symmetrical FiOS

For those who hate articles: Verizon's offering 20 Mbps upload/download for $65 a month in New York, Conneticut, and New Jersey. We need more FiOS ISPs, but at least the current one is starting to show just a little bit of initiative. Matt 06:41, 25 October 2007 (JST)

Free Film

Watching a movie afterwards seems to be becoming a tradition, so I am going to add it here to the wiki. Put up your suggestions. --Conley 01:46, 24 October 2007 (JST)
