University of Oregon follows Harvard with open access

From reading it, it sounds like UO is just suggesting OA very strongly, and making a commitment to pushing it. I see nothing solid.

The vote happened one day after Harvard's so it's not really a responce.

Bittorrent devs create Comcast busting encryption

Several BitTorrent developers have joined forces to propose a new protocol extension with the ability to bypass the BitTorrent interfering techniques used by Comcast and other ISPs.

Torrentfreak

Wasn't the current encryption good enough to stop Comcast's packet sabotage? I don't use Comcast so I don't know.Matt 05:04, 19 February 2008 (JST)

REM posts new videos under open source license

The perl artistic license v2. Interesting.

Read write web.

Draft Lessig

Draft Lessig

Update (Tuesday 8:00): Lessig is now in contemplation.

I'm looking through the photos at the end...they all have conflicting licenses and he never gives the video a CC license. Unless he actually got permission from all those people (which would totally defeat the point of CC), he completely misused CC. You heard me, Lessig misused his own license. --Conley 10:55, 20 February 2008 (JST)

Software patent case may be revisited

The same court that validated software and business method patents almost ten years ago has agreed to hear a case to decide whether or not to overturn its previous ruling.

Movie Night

I got an email from Kellie Kauffman:

"We need to get a jump on the first film we have coming up (I know its like a month away but with spring break and all yea). We will have a space in our poster cases starting this week so if you have a poster or something to advertise for His Girl Friday please let me know. We do have the request that anything done with us has the VTU logo on it and you can find it attached to this email.

We also need a flyer to take to A-1 sometime in the next week. Flyers must be to residence halls 2 weeks prior to the event and spring break makes it a bit of a pain. You might want to talk to Conley about trying for the small grant again. I assume we will be working like we did last semester where we split the costs. I will attach a co-sponsorship contract to another email sometime this week so you can have it for applying for the grant. Sorry I know a lot of this is confusing. Just need to get a jump on it. We will also need a title for the second film by the His Girl Friday showing, if not sooner. Thanks!"

I have the VTU logo; who's up for flyer-making? Reevessa 00:43, 21 February 2008 (JST)

By all accounts I'm still available to fix that audio sync problem. Of course if for some reason I can't do it I'm just going to do what I do best and hand the task off to someone else. Namely, Duff. --Matt 08:26, 21 February 2008 (JST)

T-shirts

We mentioned making t-shirts once. Does someone want to volunteer to do this?

Show and tell

Patrik found Steampunk Taxidermy

Steampunk Taxidermy because it's art and you wouldn't buy this stuff, so it's gotta be free culture right?

Conley hacked up wp-latex

It gives me error output now, and center aligns the images. Re: Bounded Closure.

I did not contribute back my code :( --Conley 03:47, 20 February 2008 (JST)

I just emailed the author some changes and suggestions. Most likely he will give me some comment about how he doesn't keep up with the plugin anymore, and I should just go away. --Conley 04:02, 20 February 2008 (JST)

Matt tried to add the tuxonice (suspend2) patch to his kernel

I eventually gave up, but at least now I understand the meaning behind this XKCD comic. The next Ubuntu release has suspend2 packages, so I'm just going to hope that they will patch the kernel for me. --Matt 14:16, 20 February 2008 (JST)

Free Film

Check out a list of free films.

Suggestions:

I'm in the mood for a really old movie. Let's watch The Kid. It's a Charlie Chaplin one. --Conley 04:23, 15 February 2008 (JST)
I've seen Nosferatu once...it might be fun to watch in a group. --Conley 00:38, 16 February 2008 (JST)
Everything is more fun in a group Conley. I thought you would have figured that one out by now. Matt 05:16, 19 February 2008 (JST)
